Springfield
Museum
Today was our field trip to the Springfield Science Museum.
The students were treated to three classes on a variety of science topics. We
started our day off learning about plants: the parts of a plant, what a plant
needs to grow, and different products we get from plants. Students even got to plant
five seeds of their own. I am curious to hear if any of the students’ seed
grow. Please keep me updated and let me know if you have any success with the
seeds. After seeds, we headed to a new classroom and learned all about water
and the water cycle. Did you know that the earth is over 70% water? Did you
know that of this water only about 1% is clean drinking water? Those are just two
of the facts students learned today. After lunch, we switched gears and learned
all about simple machines. Our trip to the museum was a great way to introduce
the students to the science topics we will be covering in third grade. Be on
the lookout for our science units to start soon! I was very proud of the
behavior our students showed while at the museum!
News
From the Classroom
In math students are learning the properties of
multiplication. Students will be using these properties to help them solve more
difficult multiplication problems. So far, the students have learned the
commutative property, associative property and the identity property of
multiplication. We will learn the distributive property later this week. Please
have your child study their multiplication facts at home.
In Writer’s Workshop we continue to write informational
writing. Students have been learning tools authors use such as simile, metaphor,
and personification to help make their writing more interesting. I am very
proud of the work the students have been producing in writer’s workshop!
If you would like to order from this month’s Scholastic Book
club, orders are due on Friday.
If you have not sent in your child’s signed report card
envelope please do so as soon as possible.
