Welcome to 5F! I am so excited to be your child's fifth grade teacher. I have enjoyed getting to know your child over the past few weeks and I can tell that we are going have a great year together. The past few weeks have been spent getting know each other, learning the classroom expectations and procedures, and reviewing concepts taught in fourth grade. Now that we are back from our week long adventure at Nature's Classroom, we are ready to jump into learning. In math we are starting the year with a unit on graphing and data. Today we launched our Writer's Workshop by generating a list of important people in our life; this list will be used to help us during our personal narrative unit. Be on the lookout for writing homework to come home later this week. In reading we are reviewing reading strategies that all good readers use to help them to better understand what they are reading. The students have also enjoyed some wonderful read alouds. (Ask your child about the following books- Enemy Pie, Unicorn Thinks He's Pretty Great, Do Unto Otters, A Bad Case of the Stripes, and a few more.) In Social Studies we are studying the three branches of government. Be sure to ask your child what branch of government they were in during our government simulation, and what their job was.
Nature's Classroom was a huge success! I had a great time spending time with your child outside of the classroom. I am proud of all the students, everyone tried something new and out of their comfort zone.
Mrs. Phillips and I took close to a thousand pictures at Nature's Classroom. I will post pictures to the blog once the office says all students have turned in the media release forms. (I also have pictures from activities in the classroom.)
