Classroom News

It was another busy week in 5F! Here is a brief review of what happened in our classroom last week.

In math we continued our module on adding and subtracting fractions. On Friday we took our mid-module assessment. I was very happy with how well the students did on this assessment. It shows that they have a thorough understanding of how to add and subtract fractions. It also showed the students used some really great mathematical thinking because there were some complex word problems involving fractions on the assessment. I am very proud of the students! :)

On Monday in reading we finished our reading and note taking for our Westward Expansion research project. Students have been reading and taking notes on their Westward Expansion topic for a few weeks. To wrap it up, students got to be the teacher. Students were into partnerships or groups of three and taught all that they have learned about their Westward Expansion topic. The rest of the week we used Close Reading to read non-fiction articles. We read articles and used evidence in the text to answer text dependent questions. We also compared and contrasted two non-fiction articles that were on the same topic. (The students really enjoyed the articles. They also had some very strong opinions about the information presented in both articles. The articles were about cloning and the ethics of cloning.)

March 2 was Read Across America Day. We has a special gues visitor come in and read a Dr. Suess book to us. (After all March 2 is Dr. Suess' birthday!) it was a Dr. Suess book that most of us were not familiar with, You are Only Old Once! It was a great book and guest did a great job reading it. Our guest reader was Adam a junior at Amherst College. Adam is a hockey player for Amherst College.

A really great group of kiddos! I love this class!
