Classroom Update

I apologize that it has been so long since I have posted to our classroom blog. I will try to get back into the routine of posting once a week. :)

Here is what the students have been doing in the classroom.

In math we are continuing with our module on multiplying and dividing fractions. The students are learning how to multiply a fraction by a whole number.  This is a long unit and will last at least three more weeks.

In science we are finishing up our geology unit. Last week the students did mineral testing. They observed the color, texture, and  luster of each mineral. They also tested the hardness and streak of each mineral. The students used this information to try to identify each mineral that was tested.
Don't forget Rock Cycle project is due Wednesday, April 6th.

In Writer's Workshop, the students have finished their Westward Expansion research project. :) We will be spending the next two weeks writing poetry. This is a short unit, but I think the students will enjoy it. On Friday students wrote a poem about an everyday object. We had some great poems about books, shoes, and even one about a clothespin. After the poetry unit we will begin a unit on argumentative writing.

In Reader's Workshop, besides preparing for the ELA MCAS, students have been learning about and reading poetry.
On Monday we will be starting a new non-fiction unit that focuses on argumentative reading. On Tuesday students will be placed into reading groups based on which debatable question they would like to research/read about. Some of the questions students could choose from included: should we focus more on underwater or outer space exploration, are extreme sports worth the risk, or should zoos be banned. Students will be reading articles and texts about the topic they chose. Some of the texts the students will be reading will have a definite opinion about the topic. Others texts will be more unbiased and students will have to learn how to read those unbiased texts to help them find information that will support their point of view. I think the students will really enjoy this next reading unit.

Have a great night!
