Welcome Back! I hope everyone has a wonderful spring break! : I hope you were able to get outside end enjoy the beautiful spring weather and spend some time together as a family!
Yesterday was a great first day back and we are already very busy again! :)
In math, we are continuing our module on multiplying and dividing fractions. Right now, we are focusing on multiplying a fraction by a fraction. Today students learned how to multiply a non-unit fraction by another non-unit fraction. (For example, 3/4 x 4/5) Students are doing a great job with their fraction work. (One thing they need to work on is remembering to simplify their answer. For example 6/12 reduces to 1/2.)
We are actually having math twice a day for the next two weeks. In the morning, we are continuing our work with fractions. In the afternoon, we are learning about volume. Yesterday, the students pretended they worked in a box factory and tried to think of the different ways they could pack 24 oranges into one box. I could have a box that has 3 rows of 4 oranges with 2 layers of oranges. The students realized there were many different ways you could pack 24 oranges into a box. A few of our students realized (without me telling them!) that we were finding the volume and that the formula for volume would be lenght x width x height. Today we continued with volume by making small boxes and finding the volume of our boxes.

In writing, we are started our argumentative writing unit. The first piece of writing the students will do in this unit, is a letter to Mr. B. The students will let Mr. B know whether or not they feel our cafeteria should continue selling chocolate milk. (This is an issue that was recently brought to Mr. B at a school council meeting.) Students will be researching chocolate milk (Is it healthy or is it unhealthy?) and will use the information they find to support their claim to Mr. B. When students are finished with their research and writing, their letters will be presented to Mr. B.
