Welcome to fifth grade and our classroom blog. I am glad that you stopped by.
We made it through our first full week of fifth grade, and it was a busy week! The students and I have been getting to know each other, and it is apparent that there are some pretty awesome kiddos in our class. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone better throughout the upcoming weeks, and creating a true sense of community in our classroom.
This week in school was filled with activities designed to help me get to know your child better. The students completed beginning of the year assessments in reading, math, spelling, and writing. These assessments help me get to know your child and learn their strengths and weaknesses. We have also been learning the routines, rules, and procedures of our classroom. In math we started our first unit. The first unit we will be studying in math is order of operations and algebraic expressions. Students learned there is an order, like a recipe, that they have to follow when solving a numeric expression. Ask your child if they remember the correct order. (I still remember the acronym I was taught to remember order of operations. It was Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. Does anyone else remember that? It stands for Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction.) In writing we are reviewing the steps to the writing process before we jump in to narrative writing. In reading students have been learning the routines of reading workshop and reading independently in a just right book. On Monday students will receive their first set of words for word work.
I will post to the blog twice a week, so be sure to check the blog at least once a week. On the blog I write about what we have been doing in the classroom, post school and class announcements, and post pictures of the students in action. Once I have received everyone's media release I will begin posting pictures to the blog.
Enjoy your Sunday afternoon! :)
