Be sure to check your child's home to school folder for your conference time. If you have not signed up for a parent-teacher conference yet, please contact me as soon as possible.
It was another busy week in our classroom. In math we finished up our unit on the coordinate plane. Students will have a short assessment on graphing points on the coordinate plane tomorrow.
In writer's workshop we are continuing our unit on narrative writing. We have been focusing on how writers come up with ideas for narratives. Students have written several drafts at this point, tomorrow students will pick a piece of writing to take through the writing process. This means we will begin the work of revising our drafts.
In Social Studies this week was spent learning about the three branches of government. Students learned who makes up each branch, the main responsibility of each branch, and the key powers of each branch. On Friday the students started a project in Google Classroom where they are making a google slide show about the three branches of government.
In reader's workshop this past week we have been focusing on characters and character traits. Lessons in reader's workshop are based on books that we have read during interactive read aloud. Right now, our interactive read aloud is Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate. This is a moving story about a fifth grade boy who is a refugee from Sudan. The book focuses on his struggle to adjust to life in the United States and his search for his missing mother. So far, the students have decided that the best character traits to describe Kek are optimistic and hopeful. Next week, students will learn how to find evidence from the text to support their character traits. Students also participate in small group guided reading and independent reading during reader's workshop. In guided reading students read a book in a small group that is on their instructional level and we focus on comprehension skills. During independent reading students read a just right book of their choice independently.
I hope everyone has a great Sunday!
