Weekly Update

I am sorry that I am late updating the blog, it was a very hectic weekend at my house.

This week in Reader's Workshop we focused on finding the mian idea. We focused on finding multiple main ideas in a single text. After focusing on finding multiple main ideas in a single article, we learned how to write a summry of a non-fiction text using main idea. On Friday, students used the skills they learned throughout the week to read an article on the amazing octopus and write a summary using main ideas.

In math students continued to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators. Students are learning to draw area models to  add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.

In Writer's Workshop, we finished up publishing our poetry anthology. On Friday, students started a fun new narrative writing piece. This narrative piece of writing is different from other narrative pieces the students have written, this piece has a fantasy element to it. Students are writing a narrative about being stuck in a snowglobe. In their narrative students are writing about how they got in the snowglobe and how they eventually get out of the snowglobe. This writing assignment also has a fun craft activity that goes with it. Be sure to check it out on the bulletin board at our writer's celebration on Friday.

In science, we are finishing up our light and sound unit. This week, the students learned about refraction, that light travels in a straight line, and that a reflection is caused by lighting bouncing back to you. The students rotated through different stations that had hands on activity involving light.

Have a great night!
