Weekly Update

We were only in school for four days, but it was a busy week in our classroom. Here is a look of what we have been up to this past week.

In math we started a new unit on decimals. Students learned what a decimal is, how to read/speak a decimal the mathmatical way, (two and four tenths, not two point four), and how to write decimals in standard form, unit form, word form, and expanded form. We also started comparing decimals and putting decimals in order from least to greatest and greatest to least. Students also took the NWEA assessment in math. We will continue working with decimals this week.

In Reader's Workshop we finished reading and researching our topic for our second agumentative peice of writing. Students took an end of unit assessment.  Students also took the reading portion of the NWEA test.

In writer's workshop students wrote their second peice of argumentative writing. Students used the information they learned and the notes they took during reading to help them write their rough draft of their essay. The next couple of weeks will be spent revising their essay.

In science we continued with our geology unit. This week we focused on the three different types of rocks. Students learned about how the three types of rocks are formed and the characteristics of each type of rock. After learning about the three types of rocks, students classified rock samples as igneous, metamorphic, or sedimentary rock based on their characteristics. Students as did a lab where they used Star Bursts to form each type of rock. This week we will be learning about the Rock Cycle.

On Friday students got a chance to join their kindergarten buddies in the library. The students read to their kindergarten buddies and did a little dancing with them. (They did the Loopty Lou with their buddies.) I love seeing our students with their buddies, they do such a great job with them!

Enjoy your day! :)
