Laughter is great thing; laughter at morning greeting is an
even better thing. Niko was in charge of morning greeting today and his rule
for greeting was any handshake greeting that you want. So we had all kinds of
handshakes this morning, big daddy jellyfish handshake, lumberjack handshake, we
even had a few foot shakes. Those foot shakes really got the giggles going,
which was a great way to start the day.

In Writer’s Workshop students continued writing their final
draft of their first piece of informational writing. I am so proud of how well
the students are doing. They students have really taken what they have learned
from the mini-lessons and applied them to their own writing. The students have
strong table of contents, great organization, and have used non-fiction text
features to help the reader learn more about the topic. I can’t wait to share
their writing with you. There will be a Writer’s Celebration at the end of this
unit. (Not for a few more weeks. I will send more information home as we get
closer.)
Today we started using this great computer software learning
tool. In Social Studies we are learning about the American Revolutionary War with
the help of Liberty’s Kids. Liberty’s Kids is an interactive software program
where we help write a newspaper for Benjamin Franklin. Right now we are
interviewing people about the events of the Boston Tea Party, to write our
first newspaper article. We are learning that we have to be fair and just journalists
and include everyone’s viewpoint. The students absolutely love it!
In math students learned about the distributive property of
multiplication and how we can use it to help us solve more difficult
multiplication problems. For example we can break down 8*17 into (8*10) +
(8*7).
