This week in math we started a unit on measurement. Students learned about volume and mass. Students learned which unit of measurement you should use when measuring certain objects. We learned the length can be measured I inches, feet, or yards. We also learned about the metric units of measurement that are used when measuring length. Ounces, pounds, or grams can be used when measuring mass. Liters can be used when measuring volume. Besides learning about which unit of measurement to use, students also practiced measuring things to nearest 1/4 inch.
In Writer's Workshop this week students finished the final draft of their persuasive speech. On Monday we watched a very powerful speech; 12 year old give a speech at a United Nations conference. We used this speech as a launching point to talk about what all great persuasive speech writers do in their writing. Students met with a partner to revise their persuasive speech. Partners listened to each other's speeches and gave suggestions on what their partner could do to make their speech stronger. Students spent the rest of the week revising, editing, and writing the final copy of their speech.
Besides their persuasive writing, students worked on a very special writing project this week. Livi, a little girl who lives in Dawsonville, Ga., was diagnosed with leukemia at the beginning of the school. She is in kindergarten. She has two wishes in life; to meet as many famous people as she can and to be famous. We can't help her meet celebrities, but we can help her feel like one. This week each student wrote a letter to Livi. Students also wrote poems and drew pictures for her. Along with all of her fan mail from the students we also sent her a Farmy, Fresh, and Fun t-shirt. (Generously donated by the PTO) Hopefully our care packages will help this little girl feel a little bit like a celebrity.
Wednesday was Family Fun Night here at Sunderland. Families were treated to a delicious spaghetti dinner, games, free books, and fun! It was a great night. It was great to see families from our classroom having a great time. Photos from Family Fun Night!
On Thursday in computer lab students practiced filming with the I-pads. This skill will be used during their next writing project. For the next writing project students will work in groups with students from Mrs. zadworny's class to create a video on a global topic. Topics include recycling, protecting the environment, stop bullying, and no smoking. For this project students will learn how to film and edit on the I-Pad.
