Reading and Writing Non-fiction and some Elapsed Time Too

In reading we started a new genre, informational text. We will be using our Social Studies textbook during reading time. We will be learning about the Wampanoag. The Wampanoag are a Native American tribe that lived along the coast of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Before we started reading our Social Studies textbook we talked about some of the non-fiction text features the students would be using in their textbooks. Students went on a scavenger hunt in their textbooks to locate certain features. We also read the same piece of text twice. First, we read it without text features. Then we read it again this time with text features. We talked about which one was easier to read- the one with text features! We discussed how the text features help the reader.

In math we have been learning how to solve word problems involving elapsed time. This can be a hard concept for students to master. The students learned different strategies they can use to help them solve these kinds of problems. They learned for problems when you have to find the starting time you can subtract, for problems when you have to find the ending time you can add, and they learned you can always use a number line or a model of a clock.
In math on Friday we tried out a new strategy for partner work called a Think, Pair, Share. First the students were given two minutes to solve a math problem independently. Then the students were given two minutes to tell their partner their answer and explain how they solved their problem. Finally, I called on partners to share what they had discussed. Instead of just sharing how they solved the problem, students had to explain how their partner solved the problem. The students did a great job with this new strategy.

Caroline explains to Stephanie how she solved the problem
Ben asks Chris a question about his answer

" How did you solve the problem?"

Ben and Riley work together to solve a problem
Even Mr. B stopped by to join in the math time fun!

In Writer's Workshop students are hard at work writing their first piece of informational texts. Friday was the students first day using what they have learned about informational writing to start their first chapter of their book.
