Finally!

Happy New Year! Welcome to 2015!  It is great to be back to school and with some of my favorite kiddos. It has been quite awhile since I have posted to the blog, so I have A LOT of pictures to post. Before I post the pictures, let me get you updated on what is happening in our classroom.

In Writer's Workshop students finished their first informational writing project. Students have started their second piece of informational writing. Students have started writing a biography of someone during the American Revolutionary time period. Students are using books and the internet to research the  person they chose. The students chose some great people to research for their biography. Caroline and Samara are writing about Sybil Ludington. (Do you know who she is?) Ben chose to write about William Dawes. ( Someone who is often left out of history books.) Stephanie, Kateri, and Jenaily chose to write about another strong female, Deborah Sampson. Students have been very busy researching and taking notes. Next week, students will begin writing their rough draft.

In math, students are using the multiplication and division strategies they learned earlier in the school year. This chapter in math contains the 7,8, and 9 multiplication tables. It will also include one digit by two digit multiplication. Students are doing a great job using the different strategies they learned to solve multiplication and division problems, ( draw a picture, arrays, tape diagrams) however I would like to see  the students become more fluent with their multiplication/division facts. Please have your child practice their facts at home for five minutes each night. Flash cards are a great way to do this. If you need multiplication flash cards at home let me know I have extra.

In reading students are finishing up reading  about the Puritans who settled in Massachusetts. They are using what they learned about the fighting that broke out between the colonists and Native Americans to write a newspaper article. Their newspaper article shows they understand what they read about because it summarizes what they read. They also have to be unbiased and present the point of view of both the colonists and Native Americans. When students finish their newspaper articles we will begin reading about the events that led up to the Revolutionary War.

We will be starting an exciting writing project with our kindergarten buddies soon. Each year the kindergarten students write an informational piece on an animal and this year the third graders will be helping them with this project. This Friday we will join our buddies in the computer lab to help the kindergarten students gather information on their animal. This is a great chance for our students to take on a  mentor role. I love seeing our students interact with their buddies, they are always so kind and patient.

If your student has not returned their permission slip and $5.00 to go see Aladdin in March, it is due this Friday, February 23rd. Thanks!

Pictures from our Drop in the Bucket Party. (This  was the Friday before the holiday break.)
They had a great time playing games, reading, and drawing in the morning. Plus a great afternoon of pizza, brownies, and a movie. ( Thanks Mrs. Penza for the brownies!)
