Not only are we writing poetry in Writer's Workshop we have been reading poetry during our reading block. Students have been learning about the different types of figurative language that authors use when they write poetry. Students learned about similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia, personification, alliteration, and hyperbole .After learning about figurative language students went on a poetry scavenger hunt looking for poems that contain these different poetic devices. We also celebrated National Poem in your Pocket Day on Thursday, April 30th. Students copied and illustrated a favorite poem to keep in their pocket on that day. Students shared their poem with the class. I love reading poetry! I have several students in the classroom that are really enjoying reading poetry, especially some of the funny ones. Jack Prelutsky and Shel Silverstein are two very funny poets for kids. I am also reading aloud the book
Pizza, Pigs, and Poetry: How to Write a Poem by Jack Prelutsky. In the book he tells where he gets the ideas to write his poem. It is a great book to read when you are writing poetry. It gives the kids some great writing tips.
After MCAS we will start book clubs based on the students' interests.
Here some pictures from reading and poetry.
