5F Has Talent

Today was the first ever Cafe Sun with our new music teacher Miss Sue. It was a great and we have some very talented students in our classroom. Cafe Sun started with Manjot, accompanied by her younger bother and cousin, singing a traditional Punjabi song. (Two boys in our classroom, Lincoln and West helped out by playing  instruments while the trio sang.) We also had several girls from our classroom perform a dance as a group number. Aneila did an excellent job singing a solo of Down by the Riverside.  The entire fifth grade sang Day-o. (The Banana Boat Song) It was a great show!

In reader's workshop we are focusing on character traits. Today students worked with a partner( A few students chose to work alone.) to choose a character trait they thought described a character in Because of Winn Dixie. Once they decided on a character trait they looked in the book to find where that idea lives in the book.(evidence)

In Writer's workshop we reviewed verbs. After reviewing what a verb is, we talked about using precise verbs in our writing. We looked at verbs that are overused in our writing. (Say, ask, walk, etc) Students worked with a partner to come up with more precise verbs that can be used in our writing. Afterwards, students went back into their writing and replaced imprecise overused verbs with more precise verbs that will help the reader create a mental movie in their mind.

In social studies we are nearing the end of our government. (Which means we will be switching to a science soon! Our first science unit will be on invertebrates.) Today the students did more work with Bill of Rights. Students were divided into groups(Yes, we do quite a bit of group work in our class.) and given a set of cards. Each card had a different situation or scenerio on it. The student had to decide which ammendment would go with each. (For example a card that had to with the right to petition the government to fix a problem would go with ammendment one.)

Have a great night!
