In math we are in the middle of our division unit. In this unit we are learning division of multi-digit whole numbers and decimals. This unit will include long division. The students are doing great in this unit so far. Students are finding the approximate answer first, finding the actual answer, and then using multiplication to check their work. Yesterday everyone got a perfect score on their daily Exit Ticket. (We celebrated our success with a Thin Mint! Yummy!)
In Writer's Workshop the students are continuing to work on their non-fiction feature article. Students have learned that when writing their non-fiction articles they need to consider their audience and what information the audience brings with them, how to organize their article in sections with headings and sub-headings, and how to plan their sections with text structures in mind. On Tuesday students will be learning how to write a strong lead for non-fiction. Students will also learn about how to write a great ending/conclusion, how to use text features, and how to be creative with their heading and sub-heading titles.
In Reading Workshop students are reading a variety of non-fiction texts; including books, magazines, and articles. We have been focusing on how to find the main idea and supporting details. Today we focused on how to use context clues to help determine the meaning of unfamiliar words. We read the same text at different levels and discussed what clues authors give readers to help determine the meaning of unknown words. (I love that reading and writing are so intertwined right now! Today's reading lesson will definitely help the students with their non-fiction feature articles.). Just a reminder that your child's non-fiction book review is due on January 29th. If you have any questions about this assignment please contact me.
In science we are learning about sound and light. Right now we are focusing on sound energy. This past week we did a lot of hand ons activties related to vibration and pitch. The students really loved the activities! A musical instrument assignment went home with your student this week. Your child needs to design and create a musical instrument that can change pitch. The instrument needs to have two different pitches; one high pitch and one low pitch. This assignment is due on January 27th. One student was very excited about this assignment and has already returned their completed instrument. :) if you have any questions about this assignment please contact me.
Exciting news! On Thursday, February 4th local author, Natsha Lowe will be visiting our school. She is the author of The Power of Poppy Pendleton and The Courage of Cat Campbell. (The third book in this series will be coming out in the fall of 2016.) Your child brought home an order form if you are interested in purchasing a copy of one of her books. (She will even autograph it for your child!) If you would like to purchase a book please return the order form and money by January 28th.
Remember there is no school on Monday, due to the holiday. Enjoy your three day weekend! :)
