It was another busy week in 5F. In math we have been learning long division. The students were a little intimidated about starting long division, but they are doing quite well. We started the week off with an inquiry. Students were given a multi-step word problem that involved long division. Students were paired up and told that they could use any strategy they wanted to solve the problem. Students worked hard to solve the problem. Pairs of students used different strategies to solve the problem. Some of the strategies used were: the traditional long division algorithm, repeated subtraction, guess and check using multiplication, and using place value and multiples of ten. From there the students learned how to divide 2 digit dividends by multiples of 10 and we ended our week by dividing 3 digit dividends by 2 digit divisors. Students even played a long division math game! We will continue with long division this upcoming week.
Mathematicians Hard at Work
We finished our narrative unit this week in writer's workshop. Students finished their final draft of their narrative piece of writing. We started a new unit on poetry. We are starting our poetry unit by reading poetry. The two fifth grade classes created a walking poetry anthology. First, we brainstormed places in the school where people have to wait. For example, the lunch line, the main office, outside the art/music room, and outside the library. Next, students worked with a partner to find poetry that would be good for someone waiting in a specific area of the school. (For example, poems about food by the lunch line, poems about music for outside the music room.) Once they found a poem they liked, students typed and illustrated that poem. The poems are now hanging in various locations around the school for everyone to enjoy. The students absolutely loved this project! We will continue reading poetry next week. This time students will be looking for a self portrait poem, a poem they feel reflects who they are on the inside. I can't wait to read what they find!
In reading we compared/contrasted books that have similar themes. Students also took their end of the unit assessment. We will be starting our nonfiction unit after Thanksgiving break. This week some guided reading groups will be finishing up their books and I will be administering the Benchmark assessment on some students.
Friday, we met with our kindergarten buddies for the first fifteen minutes of computers. Students read a book to the buddy. I love seeing the fifth graders act as role models to their kindergarten buddies.
