Weekly Update

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I hope you got to spend some time with family and friends. I also hope you got a chance to relax and unwind over the weekend.

It was a short week at school, but as always, there was a lot to get done.

In math we continued with long division. Students worked on  dividing four digit dividends by two digit divisors that resulted in two digit  quotients. We will continue with dividing larger numbers this week.

In writing we continued with our poetry unit. On Monday students read poems looking for a poem that they connected with and that they felt represented who they are. On Tuesday and Wednesday students used similes and metaphors to write their own  self portrait poem that they feel reflects who they are on the inside. Students will continue to write poems this week.

In science we continued with our unit on light and sound. Students learned that sound is caused when molecules vibrate. On Tuesday students tested this by using a paper cup telephone.  Students answered the question, "Does the phone work better when the string between the two cups is loose or pulled tight? Why is this?"  We will continue learning about sound this week. (I have to say I am always amazed at how many kids have never made a paper cup telephone. I used to make them when I was a kid. How many other people used paper cup telephones when they were kids? The kids are always amazed that something so simple actually works.)

Have a great Sunday afternoon!
