Weekly Update

The flu made its way to our classroom this week. We had several students out this past week, some had verified cases of the flu and others just had a nasty virus. Hopefully, we will have a full class and healthy students  this week.

This week in math we continued with multiplying fractions. This week we focused on multiplying a fraction by a fraction. This upcoming week we will begin dividing with fractions.

In reader's workshop we continued with MCAS prep. This week we focused on non-fiction texts. Students read three different non-fiction texts about the rescue efforts of penguins after an oil spill. The articles were all on the same topic, but written in a different point of view and gave different information. Students answered multiple choice questions for each text. Students also answered an essay question that compared the differences and similarities in the point of view of each article. This was our last week of MCAS prep. On Monday students will take on a practice MCAS on the Chromebooks. The purpose of the practice test is to let students practice using the tools that are available to them on the computer based version of MCAS. On Tuesday we will return to our normal reader's workshop and guided reading. We will start a new fantasy unit on Tuesday. :)

In writer's workshop students have started their research for their non-fiction writing. Students are writing about a topic within the broader topic of westward expansion. Some of the topics students are writing about include: the gold rush, the Oregon trail, the Pony Express, and the transcontinental railroad.

In Social Studies the students are creating advertisements to either encourage or discourage people to move west. Students thought of reasons that would persuade someone to either move west or not move west and also created a slogann to go with their advertisement. Students thought of images that would help convey their message. The students are having fun with this assignment and creating some great posters.

Have a great Sunday afternoon!
