Weekly Update

Happy Mother's Day to all the wonderful moms of 5F. I hope you have an amazing day with your kiddo.

This past Wednesday and Thursday students took the math portion of the MCAS test. We still have one more test to go, the students will be taking the science portion of the MCAS in two weeks.

In reading workshop we continued with our fantasy unit. This week, focused on how the point of view affects how the story is told. We focused on first person point of view, third person point of view limited, and third person point of view omniscient. I modeled using our read aloud Tuck Everlasting, we identified the point of view of the story (third person omniscient) and how the point of view affects what we know and do not know in the story. Students practiced using either their guided reading or independent reading book. Guided reading groups finished reading their guided reading book. I love how the students have been enjoying the books they have read in guided reading groups. It is awesome to see students reading more books by the same author or continuing with a series. :) For the next few weeks, students will be working on an independent reading project during reading workshop. Your child should have brought home a letter about the project. The first assignment for this project is due tomorrow, students need to tell me the title of the fantasy book they will be reading and what book project they will be doing. Don't worry, most of the work for this project will be completed in class. :)

In writer's workshop students worked on publishing their informational writing piece on a westward expansion topic.

In science, students planted their seeds for their plant science experiment. I can't wait to see the results of this experiment. We also started a second science experiment that goes along with our Mystery Science unit, "What do fallen leaves go?" We started mold terrariums to see what household items inhibit mold growth on food. We have four mold terrariums in our classroom. Each has the same food items, slice of bread, a strawberry, and a clementine. Each mold terrarium has a different preservative to inhibit mold growth; one has salt, one has sugar, one has red pepper flakes, and one has nothing added to it. Students will be tracking the mold growth for the next two weeks.
