Weekly Update

Sorry about the delay in posting our weekly classroom update.

In math we used our multiplication and division skills to convert units of measurements. Students solved word problems that required them to convert units of measurement both in the metric system and in the U.S. customary system.  Students also expressed units of measurements as fractions and decimals. For example, 30 centimeters is equivalent to 0.3 meter.

In reader's workshop students got started on their independent reading book project. On Monday, students picked the fantasy book they would be reading for this project. Students also picked the project they will be doing to show a deep understanding of the book they read. I am very excited about the projects students have chosen to do for this project. A few of the projects include create a book trailer, compose a musical score for the book, turn a scene from the book into a graphic novel, and create a new book cover. I am very excited to see what the final projects look like! Also, this week in reader's workshop students created the rubric for the independent reading project. There were certain "non-negotiables" that need to be on everyone's rubric such as, hand in project on time, creativity, neatness, and project shows a deep understanding of the book, but students were allowed to add items they felt should be on a rubric for their specific project. Students began reading and taking notes on their fantasy book. Students need to be finished reading their fantasy book by Friday, May 26. Next week students will begin creating their final project. (Most of the work for this project will be done in school. :) )

In writer's workshop we started a new writing unit. I am very excited about this new unit and so are the students. In writing our new unit is writing a narrative fantasy story. This week we  focused on coming up with many different story ideas. Students used different strategies to come up with story ideas. First, students thought of a real life situation or problem and added a twist to make it a fantasy story. For example, take the problem of being the new kid in school and make it a fantasy story by adding this twist,  you are the new fairy to fairy school and the queen bee fairy is being mean to you. Next, students looked at pictures of different fantasy settings and came up with the story ideas that could take place in those settings. I have been so impressed with the creative ideas that the students have come up. I can't wait to see which story idea students choose to write their final fantasy  story.

In science we reviewed for science MCAS by playing jeopardy. We also continued with our mold and plant experiments.

Have a great week!!!
