Monday, February 2nd

Yesterday was Groundhog Day and Punxsutawney Phil saw  his shadow, which means six more weeks of winter. After looking at this week's weather forecast I would have to agree with him. Remember to send you child to school with the appropriate clothing to go outside at recess tomorrow; hats, mittens, and boots.

Finally! After two weeks of lots of kiddos out with various germs that are making their way around SES, we finally had a full class today! It was so nice to have everyone here today! :)

Today in Writer's Workshop students decided who they are going to write about for their biography project. Students are very excited to be starting this project, and so am I! At library this afternoon students checked out a book to help them with this project. Mrs. Kidder also has some fun activities planned for computer lab that go along with our biography project. The biography project is the last project in our informational writing unit, which means our class will be hosting another Writing Celebration soon. The tentative date for this celebration is Friday, March 1st. I will send home more information as we get closer to this date. I hope you will be able to attend! I am so excited for the students to share all of their hard work with you.

Niko checks the computer for  information about Ben Franklin

Kirsten and Ashley read to find the main idea

Looking for the main idea

In reading we continue to read nonfiction books. Students just finished reading the book What's the Big Idea Ben Franklin. Students learned all about his many inventions and also how he helped his country win freedom from England. Reading groups are working on comprehension skills such as finding the main idea, making inferences, and using context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words.
These are important skills that students carry over from reading group to their own independent reading.

In math students continue to work on single digit division. Keep practicing those multiplication facts at home.  After division we will loop back to multiplication, but this time it will be multi-digit multiplication.

Working hard to solve those division problems

Next Friday, February 14th is Valentine's Day. If your child would like to bring in Valentine's Day cards to pass out to their classmates they may do so. I sent home a class list with students today, so no one is left out.

Thank your for sharing your kiddos with me!

Remember to fill someone's bucket today!
What do you do if you finish your work early? Grab a good book and read!
