Friday, September 19th

It was a busy Friday in 3F! We are really getting into the routine of our schedule. Every morning in 3F starts with our reading block. Today we used the book, The Bears on Hemlock Mountain, to learn about the plot of a story. We learned about the different parts of the story. There's the raising action,      (events leading up to the conflict and climax) the conflict (a problem the character must solve), the climax (the most exciting or important part of the story),  and there is the falling action, the resolution( when character solves the problem and the story is tied up.) After learning about the different parts, we completed a plot diagram for The Bears On Hemlock Mountain. Today we completed the diagram together, but this is an activity that the students will complete throughout the school year independently. It is a great way to summarize the book.

In morning meeting we had fun doing one of the students favorite greeting, the cube greeting. When else do you get to greet your friends like a robot, rock star, or opera singer?

In Writer's Workshop we continued working on small moment stories. Students are trying to make their writing more interesting by writing a lead that grabs the reader's attention and makes them want to read more.

Our class is very lucky to have Ms. Giardi to help us during Writer's Workshop. She is there to work either with a small group of students or help out individuals when they get stuck.

Friday means Spanish and Profe Clarita makes learning the names of body parts fun by doing the hokey pokey.

In math we continue to learn strategies to help us solve multiplication problems. Today we learned the commutative property of multiplication. The commutative property of multiplication simply states changing the order of the factors does not change the answer. For example, 3x4 equals 12 and 4x3 equals 12.

Students learned what the commutative property of multiplication is and they drew arrays to show why it is true.

We were treated to a very special concert this afternoon here at Sunderland Elementary School. Paul Winter, a seven time Grammy Award winner, treated us to some of his beautiful music that blends musical instruments with the songs of different animals such as whales and dolphins.
