Class Update

I hope everyone had a great three day weekend. Sunday was an absolutely gorgeous fall day. I hope you were able to have some  fun outside on Sunday.
Don't forget tomorrow is our field trip to Historic Deerfield. Students need to bring a lunch from home and wear sneakers. Tomorrow is also the Fall Fun Run. We should be back in time to participate in the Fun Run.

Last Wednesday was the first Cafe Sun of the school year. We had one student perform a song about sandwiches with a few students from Mrs. Zadworny's class. It was a great performance and a great Cafe Sun.

In language arts we continue to learn about nouns. Last week the students went on a noun scavenger hunt. Students searched the room looking for word cards. If the  card had a noun  written on it they picked it up, if the card did not have a noun on it they left it alone.

                                                  Stephanie looks for a noun

                                                Hunter shows off his noun
Samara adds a noun to the our list
A few of the nouns we found

We have been very busy in Writer's Workshop. Last week students learned two very important writing skills. First, students learned about how to add dialogue to their small moment story. Students learned how to use quotation marks correctly and how dialogue can add details to their story. Students then practiced by trying to find places in their small moment story where adding dialogue would make it better.

Working hard to add dialogue to their story

Another very important skill students learned this week is when to start a new paragraph in their small moment story. Students learned paragraphs help a reader know a change is taking place. You start a new paragraph when there is a change in time, place, or in the character talking. Students practiced by proof reading a writing sample and deciding where a new paragraph should start.

Hunter and Samara work together to decide where new paragraphs shoul start
                                         Sarafina and Chris work together

Kaisac says, "I think one should start here."

                                                       Cole and Jenaily

In math students continue to learn strategies to solve multiplication and division problems. I continue to hear those words that make me so happy, "Tape diagrams are fun!"

Caroline shows off her tape diagram.
That smile says, " I love math!"
Cole shows off his related multiplication and division fact

A favorite greeting at morning meeting this year is "Ice breakers." In ice breakers students greet a friend, pull a question from a bag, and ask their friend that questions. We are learning a lot about our friends.

Mr. Hargraves is asked an ice breakers question.
                                             Jenaily asks Lucas a question

Have a great night!
