Week in Review

It was a busy week! In reading we started a new book called The Secret Soldier: The Life of Deborah Sampson. This is a great book about a woman from Massachusetts who disguises herself as a man so she can join the army and fight in the Revoltionary War. In reading we continue to read like detectives, and look for evidence from the text to support our answers. We are also learning how to find the main idea  and supporting details of a passage.
In Writer's Workshop the students have been very busy finishing the small moment story they are going to share at our Writer's Celebration on Friday. Students have been busy  editing, rewriting, and illustrating their small moment stories. I can't wait for the students to share their writing with you!

This week in spelling students learned how to divide VCCV words into syllables. Students also learned about open and closed syllables and how to tell if a syllable is an oped syllable or a closed syllable.

Jack and Ben look for syllable matches

This week in math we continued to learn strategies to help us solve multiplication and division problems. The students used the distributive property to help them solve division problems. Students broke a larger division problem into two smaller division problems.
Students also solved word problems that involving two steps. The word problems contained all four operations; addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The problems were challenging but the students did a great job using the math strategies they have learned to solve them. We will be staring a new module on telling time next week.
