We have started many new units this week. In Writer's Workshop we started our unit on persuasive writing. I told the students if they are anything like my own kids they were going to be great at persuasive writing. I related persuasive writing to a situation all of the kids could understand; asking mom or dad to buy you something or to let you do something. I read the kids two really great mentor texts; "I Wanna Iguana" and "I Wanna New Room". The students jumped right into their own persuasive writing. Right now the students are writing persuasive letters to Mr. B asking for something they think will make the school a better place. We have letters asking for longer recess, more books in the library, and classroom pets. I wonder what Mr. B's response will be when he reads all of these letters.
In math we have started a new unit on geometry. Students have been using pattern blocks to make shapes that have a certain area. In this unit students will learn how multiplication and the multiplication strategies they learned (arrays) relate to finding area of shapes.
Due to the bitterly cold weather the students have been enjoying indoor recess. Below are a few pictures from indoor recess.
Three newsletters were sent home with your child on Monday. I hope you were able to find time to read them. One newsletter gave important information about the upcoming MCAS ELA test. Another one had information about what is happening in the classroom. The third had information about the service project our class is doing. Our class is collecting donations of certain items to send to soldiers stationed overseas. We will be collecting donations until Friday, March 6th. Thank you in advance for your participation in this great project. :)
In reading we started a new unit that includes fairy tales, folk tales, myths, and fables. Students will be learning the characteristics of each genre and doing different activities. We will also be doing MCAS prep during our reading block.
Have a great night!
