Hand Washing and Read Across America

On Thursday we were visited by Nurse Jeanie and Alicia, a nursing student from GCC. They stopped by to give the students a lesson on killing germs by washing your hands appropriately. As part of their morning routine students wash their hands every morning.  Nurse Jeanie gave the students some special lotion to put on their hands before they washed their hands for the morning. If the students put their hands under a black light the germs on their hands would glow. This showed the students if they did a good job washing their hands. The goal is to be germ free.

In Writer's Workshop we continue with our persuasive writing. Students finished their letters to Mr. B telling him what they think would make Sunderland Elementary School a better place. He stopped by Friday to read a few of the letters. I know the students are anxiously awaiting an answer to their letter.

Mr. B reads some of the students' persuasive letters

Yes, that is Mr. B under that purple wig!

For the students' next persuasive writing assignment they will be writing a letter to a someone at the school they think deserves to be appreciated for all their hard work. We have students writing letters to Mr. Grace, Mr. Paul. Miss Erika, and Nurse Jeanie.

To help students remember the format for their persuasive letters I taught them to think "OREO". Oreo stands for opinion, reasons, examples, and restating your opinion. This acronym has really helped the students with their persuasive writing.

On Friday we celebrated Read Across America day by having some Suess filled fun. Our class was treated to some guest readers from UMass; who treated us to two Dr. Suess books.

On Friday a few students brought in some things to share with classmates. Samara and Jenaily brought in some colorful candles that they dipped at Yankee Candle.

Caroline brought in a newspaper that she appeared in. Caroline was photographed during P.E. Class by one of our local newspapers.

Mr. Merritt's legacy lives on; Stephanie shared a photograph of Mr. Merritt in a Cat in the Hat costume that he would wear on Read Across America day.

Our class is still collecting donations to send to our servicemen and women who are serving in Qatar. Thank you to everybody who has already donated. If you haven't donated our class will be collecting donations until Friday, March 6th. Thank you for your help with this great service project.

While I was cleaning up the classroom on Thursday I found this wonderful picture on the table. It is a great example of why I teach.  I teach because I get to spend my day with some of the best kiddos. I teach because I learn just as much from them as they learn from me. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful children with me. I truly love my job!
