The Week in Review

It was another busy week in 3F! In reading we are learning about figurative language. Students learned about idioms; a saying that doesn't mean what the words say. Students picked an idiom to Illustrate. On their illustration the student had to tell what the idiom really means. (We had some really great illustrations!)

Besides idioms, students also learned about similes. This was more of a review students did learn about and write similes in our informational unit of writing.  Students worked to identify similes, fix mixed up similes, and draw an alien based on a description that was written using all similes. We will continue figurative language this week; learning about metaphors, alliteration, and personification.

In math we continue to find area of shapes. This week students learned how to break a shape that is not a rectangle into rectangles to find the area of the whole shape. This was also a review of using the distributive property of multiplication. We will continue our module on area this week and have an end of unit assessment this week. After area, the students will start a new module on fractions.

In writing we continue with our persuasive writing unit. We started our week with the book Hey, Little Ant. In the book a little boy is about to squish an ant under his shoe. The ant gives the little boy all the reasons he should be allowed to go be free. The little boy counters with why he should squish the ant. The book ends with the boy's shoe above the  ant, asking the reader, " what would you do?" Students wrote a persuasive piece answering the question, would they squish the ant or let it go free.

We ended the week in Writer's Workshop by starting a new persuasive piece of writing. The whole class is writing about a topic that has to do with protecting the environment. This individual pieces will become part of a larger class video about protecting our environment.

Mr. B stopped by our classroom to talk to the students about the letters they wrote him. Unfortunately, some of their requests can't happen, but some are possible.

Congratulations to Josh who won first place in his age division in the Pinewood Derby. He brought in his car and trophy to share with the class. Way to go Josh!

Hunter brought in pictures from his recent ice fishing trip to share with the class.

We reviewed synonyms and antonyms by playing a game of scoot.
