On Thursday afternoon guest scientist, Maisie Shaw, lead our classroom in some really great experiments with light and sound. Maisie, who has a PhD. in polymer chemistry, shared not only her expertise in science, but also her passion for science as well. (This is what I hope the kids picked up on, her absolute love and passion for all things science!) She started the class off with the some experiments that had to do with how sounds travels, frequency, and pitch.
Our guest scientist Maisie Shaw

Maisie taught the students that light is not just a wave, but it is also a molecule. She brought refraction glasses so the students could see the different colors that make up different sources of light. (Sunlight, ceiling lights, red slash, glow stick, and Christmas lights) The students absolutely loved these experiments! (It was great to see them so excited about science!)

The students wrote thank you cards to Mrs. Shaw to thank her for coming in and spending the afternoon in our classroom and sharing her love of science with us.
In math we are continuing with long division. On Friday we started dividing with decimals. The students are working hard to perfect the skill of long division.
In reading we are learning about the different text structures authors use in non-fiction texts. Students worked in groups to read an article and identify the different text structures the author used in the article.
A few reminders about our classroom. Musical instruments are due on Wednesday, January 27th. I am excited to see what the students came up with. Non-fiction book reviews are due on Friday, January 29th.
Students who are choosing to read to be entered into the drawing to have tea with local author, Natasha Lowe, your reading logs are due Monday, February 1st. Also, if you want to order one of Natsha Lowe's books (with an autograph!) please send in order form and money by Friday, January 29th.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
