Welcome Back!

Welcome back! I hope that everyone enjoyed the three day weekend! :)

In Writer's Workshop we are learning how to determine the meaning of unknown words we might encounter as we are reading. On Friday we focused on using context clues and looking around the word to determine the meaning of unknown words. Today we learned how to look in the word to help us determine the meaning of an unknown word. Today we focused on looking for a part of the word that is familiar to us to help us determine the meaning.

In Writer's Workshop we learned about how to write a strong introduction for our non-fiction feature article. We learned that a good introduction grabs the readers' attention and gets the reader ready for what they are going to learn. Students spent Writer's Workshop writing their own introduction. A big thank you to Madelene who shared her introduction with the class at the end of Writer's Workshop. Madelene did a great job writing the introduction for her feature article on how to be a great big sister. :)

We will not have word work/spelling for the next two weeks. We will be using that time to learn about Westward Expansion. Today we looked at the painting American Progress by John Gast. We looked at the painting keeping the ideas of manifest destiny and westward expansion in mind. Students looked at the painting in groups or pairs listing all of the things that showed  the idea of manifest destiny and westward expansion.

This Thursday is International Night at our school. Come join us for are potluck dinner and free entertainment. Dinner will be served from 5:00 to 6:00 in the school cafeteria. Please bring a favorite dish to share with others. It can be a favorite family dish or as simple as chips and salsa. At 6:00 Trio Candela will perform in the gym. Trio Candela performs traditional folklore music from the Caribbean. I hope to see you there!

Have a great night!
